Aladdin is the latest Disney film to be given the live-action treatment.

However, the new project will be a prequel, which focuses on the Genie’s origins and how he got enslaved in the lamp, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Genies will be a live-action comedy adventure, which is being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, and is tipped to lead into a live-action Aladdin movie.

Disney’s 1992 animated film Aladdin, featuring the voice of Robin Williams as the blue-skinned Genie, was adapted from an Arabic One Thousand And One Nights folk tale of a street urchin who is granted three wishes when he finds a special lamp.

Aladdin, which also featured the voices of Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, was the most successful film of 1992, earning over 504 million US dollars (£322 million) worldwide.

It won Oscars, Grammy and Golden Globe awards, mostly for its soundtrack which included A Whole New World, sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle.

The film’s success has spawned two direct-to-video sequels – The Return Of Jafar and Aladdin And The King Of Thieves, an animated TV series, toys, video games, spin-offs and a Broadway adaptation.
